The dog was slow & ancient, the man was stooped & grey. I watched as , slow , they plodded , each weary step on step. And through my mind, as they went by, a tinge of sadness swept. Then stopped the dog & pointed (His form was less than fair) ; The farmer kicked the matted growth , then fired - at empty air. Thought I , he must have reasons for putting on this show , and sure he did, for when I asked he said with eyes aglow, "Old Spot & I have long been friends & hunted, side by side. I know there ain`t no quail about, but I`ll not hurt his pride. Though his nose has lost it`s keenness, he does the best he can. and in his fading , twilight hours , I`ll not let down my friend. "So when he points, I`ll kick the brush, turn sharp, & fire a shot. And walking up to where he stands I`ll say, ' Well done Old Spot!'. I watched them as they walked away, & vanished round the bend. Thought I , Old Spot you lucky dog , to have so staunch a friend.....

WHY DOGS DON'T LIVE LONGER Being a Veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year old Irish Wolfhound named Choika. The dog's owners; Dave, his wife Emma and their little boy Jason, were all very attached to Choika and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Choika and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family there was no more miracles left for Choika and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.
As we made arrangements, Dave and Emma told me they thought it would be good for the four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt Jason could learn something from the experience. The next day I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Choika's family surrounded him. Jason seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Choika slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Choika's transition without any difficulty or confusion.
We sat together for a while after Choika's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Jason, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why." Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me - I'd never heard a more comforting explanation:
He said, "Everybody is born so that they can learn how to live a good life... like loving everybody and being nice, right?" The four-year-old continued, "Well, animals already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long." ...................................anon
IF IT SHOULD BE
If it should be that I grow frail and weak, and pain should keep me from my sleep, then you must do what must be done, for this, the last battle, can’t be won...
You will be sad, I undersand; don’t let your grief then stay your hand; for this day, more than all the rest, your love and friendship, stand the test.
We’ve had so many happy years, what is to come can hold no fears. You’d not want me to suffer so, when the time comes, please let me go...
take me where my needs they’ll tend, only stay with me until the end, and hold me firm, and speak to me, until me eyes no longer see.
I know in time, you too will see, it is a kindness you do to me, although my tail its last has moved, from pain and suffering, I have been saved.
Don’t grieve that it should be you who has to decide this thing to do, we’ve been so close - we two these years, don’t let your heart hold any tears
