Dog Appeasing Pheremones

In mammals, all lactating females release substances called ‘appeasing’ pheremones.  The function of which is to reassure the offspring.  Canine ‘appeasing’ pheremones are secreted by the bitch 3 to 5 days after the puppy’s birth.  The substance is produced by the sebaceous glands in the inter-mammary cleft.  This enhances attachment between the puppy and its mother and provides reassurance and comfort.

As the puppy explores its environment it encounters new stimuli which set off emotional reactions. The puppy tends to react by looking for contact with its mother. The appeasing pheremones produced by the mother acts by stabilising the emotional state of the puppy.

Research has shown that the reassuring properties of canine appeasing pheremone persist even into adulthood. They appear to modulate both emotional state and social interaction throughout the dogs life.

Signs of stress in Dogs:

Barking, house soiling or destructive behaviour may all be signs of stress. They often appear when the animal is left alone in the house, or is seperated from you in another room.

Your dog may be over-attached to you if:

when you are away, it shows signs of distress by barking, soiling, and or destructive behaviour - and when you come back it shows excessive greeting behaviour; and all it’s activities appear to be focused around you.

The Origin of Stress.

There is a strong bond the puppy and its mother, which gives it confidence and reassurance.  When you get the puppy, you provide protection, and become the new attachment link. But as the dog matures some degree of seperation must occur.  If this is not happening, the dog may become over-attached to you.  This can lead to stress with the showing the signs described above.  Under certain circumstances, the problem may start at any time in the dog’s life.

Resulting from veterinary research, D.A.P. can help your dog in a number of stressful situations.   D.A.P. mimics the properties of the natural appeasing pheromones of the bitch.  By replicating this signal of well-being, D.A.P helps to alleviate fear and stress related signs in the puppy and the adult dog.

PUPPY

DAP helps prevent fear and stress related signs in puppies, such as restlessness and vocalisation (whining or crying) - DAP helps establish the puppy in a new environment - eg: arrival in its new home and coping with strangers.

EFFICACY

The beneficial effect of DAP in puppies and adult dogs may be observed within the first week of use.

Destructive behavious and/or Vocalisation

In clinical trials, destructive behaviour and vocalisation were improved or resolved by 72% and 85% respectively.

Fear of Fireworks

Clinical trials show an 80% improvement in the clinical signs most frequently observed by the owners (panting, trembling, cowering, hiding)

Duration of use may be adapted according to individual needs.

Adult Dogs

DAP helps stop fear and stress related signs in adult dogs, such as destructive behaviour, vocalisation, house soiling and excessive licking. DAP comforts the dog in a stressful environment (visitors, strangers, preparing for a visit to the Vet. , novel or unpredictable situations)

Easy to Use

DAP is an easy to use plug-in diffuser, which continuously releases the active ingredient into the dogs environment and allows trouble free treatment for approximately four weeks per bottle) it plugs into any convenient 13-amp square-pin socket.  DAP is a natural solution. There are no sedative effect, and the dogs ability to interact and play is maintained.

HELP YOUR DOG to overcome the fear of fireworks.

Two weeks before the event - plug in the DAP diffuser in the room the dog uses to rest and relax.

On the day of the event - feed your dog a good meal which is rich in carbohydrate with added vitamin B6 mid to late afternoon, so he has a full stomach over the evening (don’t try this if your dog is prone to diarrhoea when it is scared or at other times).  If necessary don’t feed him at any other time in the day which will ensure a good appetite.

Move your dog to a blacked out room at sundown with some toys and preferably things for you to do as well, so he is not abandoned in the room. Blacking out the room removes the potential for additional problems from flashing lights

Put some music on, preferably something with a lot of constant drumbeats. It doesn’t have to be loud as long as there is a constant distracting beat to the music.

Ignore the noises yourself, and try and engage your pet in some form of active game.

Don’t punish your dog when he is scared, if only confirms that there was something to be afraid of.

Don’t fuss or try to reassure your dog when he’s scared, as this rewards the behavior.

Ignore any fearful behaviour that occurs for no good reason.

Make sure your dog is kept in a safe and secure environment at all times so that it doesn’t bolt and escpate if a sudden noise occurs.

After the event - leave the DAP diffuser plugged in for one week.

Do not ignore the problem just because it happens only once or twice a year. Instigate a desensitation programme with a qualified behaviourist once the season is over, and you have control over the environment again.

Helping your dog to Stay Alone

Leaving & Returning.   Try to make these events insignificant and thus decrease the amount of stress to your dog.

30 minutes before leaving, try not to show any interest in the dog.  Leave naturally, without talking to the dog or making prolonged goodbyes.

When you return, ignore the dog until it calms down, Fuss the dog only when it has calmed down. Try to be the one who initiates contact such as play, petting or treats. Do not allow the dog to dictate when it interacts with you.

Generally give the dog independance - force him to spend time in a different room than you - the use of door gates can help in difficult cases.   Teach the dog to be stroked and handled by other individuals and remember that if your dog misbehaves during your absence, do not punish it, it won’t understand!

Policy on damaged goods received

The DAP Spray similar to the DAP Plug-in Unit - used to help dogs feel less anxious, more calm and more safe. The Spray can be used during fear of travel and is designed to be sprayed onto the bedding.

Feliway Defuser - similar to the Canine Dap - this is an effective way to control and manage unwanted feline behavious such as urine marking, scratching, stress and anxiety.

Dap Canine Collar - Uses
Proven to help comfort both puppies and adult dogs in challenging situations outside, the D.A.P. Collar is recommended:

• To help a puppy settle into a new environment away from his mother and siblings
• To help a rescue dog adjust to a new home and family
• To help dogs remain calm during a stay in kennels
• To ensure a puppy’s first experiences of new activities are positive, especially during the socialisation period
• To help dogs cope with novel and unpredictable situation away from the home
• To help dogs exhibiting fear related reactions outside the home when encountering traffic, other dogs, thunderstorms, gunshots etc.

The D.A.P. Collar works by releasing a constant stream of synthetic dog appeasing pheromone for a period of about 4 weeks. The dog appeasing pheromone is a substance produced naturally by a lactating bitch to reassure and calm her puppies, as they explore and learn about the world around them.

Importantly this pheromone is also proven to have a positive relaxing and comforting influence on adult dogs, increasing their confidence in the outside world and make the process of accepting new or difficult stimuli more relaxed and less challenging.

Combining the D.A.P. Collar with the D.A.P. Diffuser may provide optimum results for dogs showing indoor and outdoor fears and for puppies or adult dogs settling into a new home. In multi-dog households, it is recommended that all the dogs wear a D.A.P. Collar or that a D.A.P. Diffuser used. The D.A.P. Collar should be left on the dog at all times.

g Collar - this lasts about four weeks - and works similarly to the Defuser Unit.
